Do Shopify discounts work in ChatGPT and AI checkouts?
Automatic Shopify discounts already apply. A discount code still has to be entered, and two things your storefront does for you do not come with them.

In Discounty: Bulk price editor See how the Shopify bulk price editor works
Yes. When a shopper buys from your Shopify store through ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, every automatic Shopify discount you are running applies, with nothing to configure. A discount code works too, once someone enters it. Shopify's Help Center says so for each channel that checks out inside the chat. What stays behind is the part your theme draws, and the agent's willingness to talk a shopper into a bigger basket.
An AI assistant reads what Shopify itself knows about the price. Widgets drawn by your theme, such as a countdown timer or a shipping progress bar, are not part of that.
Which AI assistants can sell from a Shopify store?
On 11 January 2026 Shopify announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard it co-developed with Google that lets an AI agent complete a purchase for a shopper. Shopify groups the assistants that sell your products under the name agentic storefronts, and its Help Center lists where each one finishes the sale:
- Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta offer direct checkout, a Shopify checkout that runs inside the AI channel. For now it is shown only to shoppers in certain countries: the US for Copilot and Google, and the US, Canada and Mexico for Meta. Google also requires the store itself to be based in the US. On Google, shoppers in other countries are sent to your online store to buy.
- ChatGPT finds your products and sends the shopper to your own store's checkout, in its in-app browser or a new tab. Your store needs to sell to US customers.
- Shop, Shopify's own app: you set how it checks out in the Shop sales channel.
You manage Copilot, Google, Meta and ChatGPT in Sales channels → Agentic in your Shopify admin.
Why do Shopify discounts still apply in an AI checkout?
No AI channel runs a checkout of its own. Each one ends at a Shopify checkout, either inside the chat or on your store. For Copilot, Google and Meta, Shopify's Help Center states that "any automatic discounts or discount codes that you set up are supported" in direct checkout, and that discount and shipping Functions run there. A shopper sent to your store from ChatGPT uses your normal checkout.
Direct checkout is not a full copy of your storefront checkout, though. Shopify lists what it does not support there: subscriptions, product bundles and customizable products, local delivery and pickup, and Google Analytics and custom pixels. Some checkout blocks, such as upsells, loyalty and trust badges, may not display, and Meta does not show checkout blocks at all. Discounts are on the supported side of that list.
What that means in practice depends on how the discount is applied:
| How the discount works | Where it lands | What the shopper sees |
|---|---|---|
| The sale price is written into the product | Shopify's catalog, which feeds every channel | The agent knows the sale price during the conversation, before checkout starts |
| The discount is calculated at checkout | Shopify Functions, on Shopify's backend | The discount applies as the cart is built, exactly as it does on your storefront |

A campaign that edits the price itself is part of what the agent reads, so the agent can quote the sale price in conversation. If a shopper asks whether anything is on sale, a price-edited product can be the answer.
The second row covers quantity discounts, cart goals, buy X get Y, discount codes and shipping discounts. Those are calculated when the cart comes together, and they are calculated the same way whether a person or an agent built it.
A discount code is the exception. It works in an AI checkout the way it works at your own checkout: nothing happens until a code is entered. The shopper can enter it, or ask the agent to submit it, but the agent will not find it on its own. If your sale runs on a code, make sure the code is somewhere the shopper will see it before they start the conversation.
What does not carry over into an AI chat?
The agent will not talk your customer into a bigger basket. It does not read your campaign rules ahead of time, so it will not say "add one more and you save 20%." A shopper who happens to add the second item gets the discount; a shopper who does not is never told. Whether that changes depends on how the AI platforms build their agents, not on a setting in your store.
Nothing you added to your theme appears in the chat. Countdown timers, the shipping progress bar, the Saving on cart line and the quantity and cart goal widget are all drawn by your theme. In a direct checkout the agent does not render the theme, so none of them appear. The shopper still gets the full discount, without anything on the page pointing it out.

If your sale relies on the cart to nudge shoppers toward the next tier, expect that nudge to be missing for orders that come through an AI channel.
Why do some discount apps fail in AI checkouts?
The difference is where the app applies the discount. Some apps create draft orders, some inject JavaScript into your theme, and some apply a discount only when the shopper arrives through a particular link. A direct agentic checkout skips all of those, since the agent goes straight to Shopify's checkout and never loads your storefront.

Discounty uses Shopify's own pricing fields and Shopify Functions for every campaign type, so there is nothing extra to set up. If you use a different app, ask which of those mechanisms it is built on.
What should I check on my own store?
- Open Sales channels → Agentic in your Shopify admin and confirm the channels you want are on
- If your sale runs on a code, put the code where shoppers will see it before they ask an assistant
- If a discount is not appearing where you expect it, visit the Discounty Help Center before changing the campaign
Questions
Do I need to set anything up for my discounts to work in ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT sends the shopper to your own store's checkout, the same one your storefront uses. Any automatic campaign you are already running applies with no extra configuration. A discount code still has to be entered by the shopper at checkout.
Will ChatGPT tell my customer about a quantity discount before they buy?
Not today. AI agents do not read campaign rules ahead of time, so an agent will not suggest adding another item to reach a discount. The discount still applies if the shopper adds it.
Do countdown timers and progress bars show up inside an AI chat?
No. Those are part of your Shopify theme and an agent does not render the theme. The discount still applies, but the countdown or the bar is not drawn.
Which of my campaigns can an AI agent quote in conversation?
Anything that changes the product's price directly. That price is in the catalog the agent reads, so it can be quoted during the conversation, before checkout.
Do discount codes work in an AI checkout?
Yes, once someone enters the code. The shopper enters it at checkout, or gives it to the agent to submit. The agent will not apply a code it has not been given.
Does this work on Gemini and Copilot too, or only ChatGPT?
Not only ChatGPT. Copilot, Gemini and Meta run a Shopify checkout inside the AI channel for shoppers in the countries they support, and Shopify's Help Center confirms automatic discounts, codes and Shopify Functions apply there. ChatGPT sends the shopper to your store's checkout, where your discounts apply as usual. On Google, shoppers outside the US are sent there too.
