Two kinds of Shopify discount app, and which one fits your sale
Most discount apps either rewrite your product prices or take money off in the cart and at checkout. That difference decides where shoppers see the sale price, and what happens the day you remove the app.
Two ways to discount, side by side
| Question | Discounts at checkout | Price editing |
|---|---|---|
| How the discount is applied | Calculated in the cart and at checkout. The product’s price stays as it is. | The product’s own price is rewritten, and the old one moves to compare-at. |
| On the product page | Needs a widget in your theme to show the offer before the cart. | Your theme shows the sale price and strike-through by itself. |
| Collection pages, search and POS | Shows once the discount is calculated, usually in the cart. | Shows everywhere Shopify draws a price. |
| Offers that need a cart | Built for them: buy X get Y, spend thresholds, free shipping, order codes. | Not possible: the price is the same whatever is in the cart. |
| When you uninstall | Nothing is left behind: the prices were not changed. | Prices stay as they are unless the sale was ended first. |
| Fixed prices in other markets | Usually left alone. | Worth checking before a big sale. |
Which one suits your sale
Choose checkout discounts if
- Your offer only makes sense once there is a cart: buy X get Y, free shipping over a threshold, an order code.
- You have fixed prices per market and want them untouched.
- You are happy to add a widget so shoppers see the offer earlier.
Choose price editing if
- You want the sale price on the product page, the collection page and POS without adding anything.
- You want your own theme’s sale badge and strike-through.
- You are putting a whole collection on sale, not reacting to a cart.
Do you need an app at all?
Not for a simple sitewide percentage or a single code; Shopify’s own discounts do that. An app matters when you want the sale price on product pages, steps by quantity or cart value, a gift added to the cart, a countdown, or many campaigns that start and end on schedule. Discounty runs both kinds from one place, so you are not installing a second app when the sale changes. Want the apps by name? See Shopify discount apps compared.
Where Discounty sits: in both columns
Discounty covers a whole season from one place, and the honest cost is the same as any price-editing app: end a sale before you remove the app. Safe uninstall in Discounty does it for you.
Bulk price editor
Price editing. The sale price shows everywhere Shopify shows a price.
Quantity discount
At checkout, with a tier table on the product page.
Cart goal
At checkout, by how much the shopper spends.
Buy X get Y
At checkout, with a gift pop-up, or the gift added for them on the Discounty plan.
Shipping discount
At checkout, automatic or by code, with an optional progress bar from the Essential plan.
Advanced discount code
A code: products, the order and shipping at once.
Questions merchants ask
Which kind is Discounty?
Both, by campaign type. Bulk price editor rewrites the price. Quantity discount, Cart goal, Buy X get Y, Shipping discount and Advanced discount code work in the cart and at checkout.
Is one kind better?
No. They fail in different places. The checkout kind can’t show the offer on a collection page without help; the price-editing kind leaves prices changed if you remove it in the middle of a sale.
Can both show a struck-through price?
Yes. Checkout apps show one through a widget; price-editing apps get it from your theme. The difference is what has to be installed and where it appears.
I’m moving from another discount app. What first?
End every campaign in the old app before you remove it, and check a few product prices afterwards. Most switching trouble is a sale still running when its app was uninstalled.
Will it stack with my Shopify codes or another app’s discounts?
Usually, and Shopify sets the rules for every app. Any code or automatic discount applies on top of a Bulk price editor sale price. Quantity discount and Cart goal combine with product, order and shipping discounts by default. Buy X get Y, Shipping discount and Advanced discount code combine with whatever you tick in the campaign, as long as the other discount allows it too. Two product discounts on the same item give the shopper the better one, unless you are on Shopify Plus and the Discounty or Ultimate plan (Quantity discount and Cart goal never stack with each other), and only one shipping discount applies per order. Another app’s discounts follow the same rules if that app supports Shopify’s discount combinations. How each campaign type combines.
Is there a limit on automatic discounts?
Yes, Shopify’s: 25 active automatic discounts per store, shared by every app. All your Quantity discount and Cart goal campaigns use one of them together; each automatic Buy X get Y or Shipping discount campaign uses one; Bulk price editor uses none.
Can I run two discount apps?
You can, but two apps that both change prices is where the hardest problems start. If you keep two, keep them on different products.
Try it on the free plan first
Run one small campaign, end it, and check the prices come back. That is the test worth doing whichever app you pick.
