How do Discounty discounts work with Shopify POS?

Which Discounty campaigns work on Shopify POS, the Discounty Campaigns tile, POS Pro requirements, and Sales channels settings.

Discounty campaigns can run in your online store, in your retail locations through Shopify POS, or in both. Which campaigns work at the register depends on the campaign type, your location's POS subscription, and the campaign's Sales channels or Product availability setting. Your staff can also use the Discounty Campaigns tile in the POS app to add Buy X get Y rewards and apply discount codes.

Choosing where a campaign applies: the Sales channels setting

Quantity discount, Cart goal, Buy X get Y, Advanced discount code and Shipping discount campaigns have a Sales channels card on the campaign form with three options:

  • Online and POS: applies on all sales channels. This is the default.

  • Online: Online Store, Shop App, and other non-POS channels.

  • POS: Point of Sale locations only.

Choosing a sales channel is available on the Discounty plan and above. On other plans, the card keeps the default, Online and POS.

For these campaign types, Sales channels controls two things:

  • Where the discount applies. A campaign set to Online never applies to a POS sale, and a campaign set to POS never applies online.

  • Which products the campaign includes. Discounty includes products that are active and published to the selected channel or channels. A campaign set to Online includes only products published to the Online Store, a campaign set to POS includes only products published to the Point of Sale channel, and Online and POS includes products published to either.

For example, a Buy X get Y campaign set to POS triggers only for in-store sales, and only for products published to your POS channel.

When you choose Online and POS or POS on a Quantity discount, Cart goal, Buy X get Y or Shipping discount campaign, the form reminds you that these discounts need POS Pro. See "Why automatic discounts need POS Pro" below.

Campaigns created before the Sales channels setting was introduced don't show this card and keep working as before.

Bulk price editor campaigns: the Product availability setting

Bulk price editor campaigns have a Product availability card instead of Sales channels, with three options:

  • Products published on Online Store (the default)

  • Products published on POS

  • Products published on Online Store or POS

Choosing an option is available on the Discounty plan and above. On other plans, the card keeps the default.

This setting only controls which products are included in the campaign. A Bulk price editor campaign changes the product's actual price and compare-at price, so the new price shows wherever the product is sold, including Online Store, POS and any other active sales channel. The form reminds you: "The price changes will be visible wherever the product is published: Online Store, POS, and any other channel. This option only controls which products are included in the campaign."

For example, you set Product availability to Products published on Online Store. A product published to both channels gets its new price everywhere, including at the register. A product published only to POS isn't changed, because it isn't included in the campaign.

Using the Discounty Campaigns tile in the POS app

The Discounty Campaigns tile (subtitle "Rewards and discount codes") gives your staff one place to find Discounty offers for the current sale. When staff tap the tile, it opens a Discounty Campaigns screen with two sections:

  • Ready to add: the Buy X get Y rewards the current cart has earned. Each offer shows the campaign name, the reward discount (for example "Free" or "50% off"), how many reward items are left to add, and the reward products. Staff tap Add next to a product to add it to the cart, and the Buy X get Y discount is applied to it. Only campaigns whose Sales channels setting includes POS appear here. If the cart hasn't earned a reward yet, the section says "No Buy X get Y reward for this cart yet."

  • Discount codes: your active Advanced discount code and Shipping discount campaigns that use a code, with the campaign name and code. Staff tap Apply to add the code to the cart. Shopify checks the code against the campaign's rules, so a code the cart doesn't qualify for isn't applied. If there are no active code campaigns, the section says "No active discount codes."

The tile appears on the POS home screen like other app tiles. Buy X get Y rewards still need a POS Pro location to be discounted.

Adding gifts automatically: the Discounty Free Gifts tile

The Discounty Free Gifts tile (subtitle "Added automatically") sits next to the Discounty Campaigns tile. Add it to your POS home screen and it puts the free gift in the cart for your staff, so they don't have to add it by hand.

It works with Buy X get Y campaigns whose Reward selection method is Auto-add to cart and whose Sales channels setting includes POS. You don't need to change anything in the campaign.

  • When the cart qualifies, the tile adds the gift and shows a short message confirming it.

  • If the cart stops qualifying (for example, an item is removed), the tile takes the gift back out.

  • If staff remove the gift themselves, or the gift can't be added (for example, it's out of stock), the tile doesn't add it again until the cart is emptied.

  • Tap the tile to make it check the cart right away.

As with other Buy X get Y rewards, the gift is only discounted at POS Pro locations. The tile adds the gift product itself; for a campaign with several gift variants, it adds the first one.

Why automatic discounts need POS Pro

This is a Shopify platform limitation, not one Discounty sets. Shopify makes automatic discounts available only at locations with a POS Pro subscription. At POS Lite locations, automatic discounts apply to online orders only. Discounty's Quantity discount, Cart goal and Buy X get Y campaigns use Shopify's automatic discounts, so they can't run on POS Lite.

Advanced discount code campaigns are discount codes, not automatic discounts, so staff can apply them on POS Lite and POS Pro, as long as the campaign's Sales channels setting includes POS.

To check which POS plan each location uses:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels → Point of Sale.

  2. Click Locations → Manage subscriptions.

  3. In the "Review POS subscriptions for each location" section, you'll see the plan for each location (POS Pro or POS Lite).

Why shipping discounts need POS Pro

Shopify's Ship to customer option, selling an item in-store and shipping it to the customer with the shipping fee on the same order, is available only with POS Pro. For example, if a customer in your store wants an item delivered, you need POS Pro to add the shipping charge to the sale. Because shipping can't be added to a POS Lite order, there's nothing for a Shipping discount campaign to discount there.

What your staff see at the register

  • Bulk price editor: nothing to do. The discounted price is the product's price, so it appears in the cart automatically.

  • Quantity discount, Cart goal, Buy X get Y and Shipping discount: these apply automatically at POS Pro locations when the cart qualifies. For Buy X get Y, staff can add the reward from the Discounty Campaigns tile, or the Discounty Free Gifts tile adds it automatically when the campaign uses Auto-add to cart. Staff can turn automatic discounts off for a single sale from the cart's More actions → Automatic discounts. This affects only that sale.

  • Advanced discount code and Shipping discount codes: staff tap Apply in the Discounty Campaigns tile, or tap Apply discount in the POS app (from the smart grid or the cart's More actions menu) and enter the code.

For the POS app itself, see Shopify's guide to applying discounts in the Shopify POS app.

Discount not applying at the register? Check these first

  1. The location's POS plan. Quantity discount, Cart goal, Buy X get Y and Shipping discount campaigns need POS Pro at that location.

  2. The campaign's Sales channels setting. It must be Online and POS or POS. A campaign set to Online never applies in-store.

  3. The product's sales channels. The product must be active and published to the Point of Sale channel in your Shopify admin. Products published only to the Online Store aren't included in a POS campaign.

  4. The campaign status. The campaign must be Active. A Scheduled, Expired or Blocked campaign doesn't apply anywhere.

  5. Automatic discounts turned off in the POS app. If staff turned automatic discounts off for a sale, Discounty's automatic campaigns won't apply to that cart.

  6. Bulk price editor timing. The new price reaches POS as soon as Shopify has the updated product price. For large campaigns, wait until the campaign has finished applying and shows Active.
